Patent applications for ¡®Projection TV¡¯ for home theater use are increasing, according to KIPO.

KIPO said on December 17 that applications for projection TV related patents have been consistently increasing over the last five years : 104 cases in 1999, 111 cases in 2000, 162 cases in 2001, 208 cases in 2002, 139 cases in 2003.

Projection TV is less expensive than LCD or PDP TV while its quality and design are improving. That is considered to be what attracts consumers.

Applications by Korean companies take up 67.8% of total applications from 1999 to 2003(724 cases); ones from US companies account for 15.7% and ones from Japanese companies take up 11.6%.

¡°Home and overseas demands for projection TV are expanding and the competition for the technology development is getting fierce.

A new concept projection TV which has applied technologies used for LCD and PDP to it will appear and that will become the main stream,¡± prospected a KIPO official.
