KIPO said on December 10 that Korean major semiconductor makers are being eager to apply for patents of PRAM, thinking it could replace flash memory which is currently forming a huge market.

PRAM is considered to be the great memory for mobile information devices because it is a high integrated memory and it can store data even when a power supply is shut down.

Ovonyx in the United States, the PRAM source technology holder, and other companies including Intel Corp., Samsung Electronics Co., Hewlett-Packard Co., etc are leading the development of PRAM; Korea¡¯s Samsung has joined the competition, releasing 64 mega PRAM.

Accordingly, patent applications for PRAM have largely increased since 2002: The applications almost doubled to 60 cases in 2002 from 30 cases in 2000.

KIPO prospects that since PRAM is believed to be the best memory that meets the need for high capacity of mobile information devices, the competition for PRAM development will get fiercer next year.
