TriGem Computer, a Korean major PC manufacturer, is getting a patent attack from Japanese PC companies. This sort of patent attack by Japanese companies needs to be paid attention to because they could target other Korean major PC companies next time.
It has been revealed lately that Toshiba had filed a patent infringement lawsuit, in June 2003, against TriGem Computer with U.S court claiming TriGem infringed Toshiba's patents relevant to laptop computer power supply saving.
"The technology can't be considered as a patent because it is the common technology which is widely being used," said TriGem Computer. "The case is currently at the CA Western court in the U.S; but whatever the result would not have an effect on our financial status."
It has also been revealed that a Japanese PC manufacturer which used to be in cooperation with TriGem Computer is preparing for a patent infringement suit against TriGem as well. A person concerned in this Japanese company said, "As TriGem Computer has violated our laptop computer power supply saving patent, our head office has been getting ready for the lawsuit since last year."
Korean PC industry is regarding Toshiba's patent attack, along with its expansion to Korean market, as Toshiba's sort of warning that has been sent to Korean major PC companies.
"Toshiba has produced the laptop computer for the first time in the world, therefore, it has got most relevant patents. There could be further attacks against Korean companies," an expert in the industry said. "The Korean PC industry which is in the growing period should be ready for this."
