Korean large companies are increasing their patent applications this year.

As patent attacks by companies from developed countries are getting intense, Korean large companies are enhancing their patent management by expanding their specialized patent department and hiring patent attorneys, trying to cope with patent disputes and ensure more industrial property rights.

According to KIPO on Aug 8th, the number of patent applications to KIPO by Korean top 10 companies - who are applying for patents the most - during the first half of this year, jumped 40.2 % to 18,799 from 13, 409, the same period of last year.

That accounts for 31.0% of total applications while it took up 25.4% last year.

Applying 5,804 cases during the period, Samsung Electronics reached No. 1 among the companies. It was followed by LG Electronics with 4,516 cases; Samsung SDI with 1,993 cases; Hyundai Motor Company with 1489 cases; Hynix with 1,645 cases; Daewoo Electronics with 1,221 cases; LG Philips LCD with 896 cases; Hyundai Mobis with 671; and SK telecom with 513 cases.

An executive at Sumsung Electronics said, " We will strengthen patent management preparing for patent disputes with foreign companies."
