Samsung Electronics on Sunday announced it is aiming to become one of the top three patent holders in the U.S. by 2007 with a target to develop over 2,000 new technologies.
The company said it took sixth place in terms of patents registered with the U.S. Patent Office in 2004, with 1,604 patents in semiconductor, digital media, information communications, and liquid crystal display (LCD), but wants to be third by 2007. Samsung was the only Korean company in the top ten, alongside five Japanese companies and four from the U.S.
A company official said Samsung paid a total of W1.5 trillion in patent fees last year, which is likely to increase to W2.5 trillion by 2010. This is forcing the company to plot strategies to reduce patent fee payments and increase patent earnings by developing new technologies.
