The increasing number of patent lawsuits in South Korea led twenty-seven local semiconductor and display panel manufacturers to form a patent consortium Wednesday to protect their intellectual property rights. Foreign rivals, which dominated the market in the past, have been trying to defend their market positions by launching patent suits against local companies.

* The consortium will give domestic manufacturers and research institutes the opportunity cooperate in patent-related issues.

* The consortium is made up of 23 small and medium sized enterprises as well as larger conglomerates including SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO. (KSE:005930), LG ELECTRONICS (KSE:066570), LG PHILIPS LCD (KSE:034220), HYNIX (KSE:000660), DONGBU ANAM SEMICONDUCTOR CO., and MAGNACHIP SEMICONDUCTOR INC.
